Valiyaparamba Backwaters
One of the most scenic backwater stretch in Kerala, Valiyaparamba is an ideal picnic spot and a fishing center, at a distance of 4kms from Nileswaram. The place derived its name from Valiyaparamba Island, the longest in this region, stretching 24kms from Azhithala to Ezhimala. Tourists can enjoy the backwater cruise by riding the Kettuvallam (Kerala Houseboats) through the lush green palm groves and the paddy fields. Scores of little islands, narrow beaches, thick groves of coconut and areca-nut and four rapidly flowing rivers make the backwaters a lasting experience. House boat cruises are organised by Bekal Resorts Development Corporation (BRDC) in the Tejeswini river from Kottappuram to Kannur. They also arrange bonfire dinners on nearby islands, canoeing, visits to temples, forts and tribal villages.
